In the Faewilde, butterfly migrations are not always graceful.

Sometimes a whole cloud of wings sets off at once, each one certain it knows the proper route. Some follow sunlight. Some follow flowers. Some follow a rumor from a beetle who was, frankly, not qualified to give directions.

Wingtangle is what happens when all of them arrive in the same narrow shaft of golden air.

The first butterflies hover above the rest, pale and iridescent, pretending they are in charge. Below them, smaller wings and amber leaves gather in a bright little snarl of chain and motion, as if autumn and spring both tried to pass through the same doorway at once.

The frogs insist this is not chaos. They call it “seasonal coordination.” No one has been brave enough to correct them.
