There are stories in the Faewilde that no one remembers beginning.
A quarrel between two villages that has outlived both villages. A path through the woods that moves every seventh winter. A friendship between enemies whose names have been forgotten, though the peace they made remains. A song sung once beneath a particular moon and never heard again.
Somewhere, a Loreacle was watching.
Loreacles are among the Faewilde's oldest and most devoted observers, although asking one precisely how old is unlikely to produce anything resembling an answer. They have watched kingdoms rise, roads disappear, forests change their minds, and generations of mortals wander briefly through places they were never entirely certain they had visited. Their purpose is not to interfere. It is to remember.
Their countless observations are bound somehow to Aranbrid and the great Faewilde Chronicles. No Loreacle has ever been seen writing in its pages, yet the Chronicles continue to fill themselves with the stories they have witnessed. One Loreacle may see only a conversation beneath an oak. Another, centuries later, may witness the consequence. Somewhere between them, the Chronicle understands the tale.
This is also why Loreacles have acquired an undeserved reputation for prophecy. They cannot see the future. They have simply seen an astonishing amount of the past. Patterns become rather obvious after the first few millennia.
Ask a Loreacle what tomorrow will bring, and it may instead tell you at considerable length about a baker, three missing geese, and a thunderstorm from six hundred years ago. This is generally considered unhelpful.
It is occasionally extremely helpful.
And on the rare occasion that a Loreacle abandons its anecdotes and gives direct advice, even the oldest inhabitants of the Faewilde know better than to ignore it.
They are solitary observers when the occasion calls for discretion, but just as often arrive in curious little droves, each watching something different and each apparently convinced that theirs is the important part. Whether they agree afterward is another matter entirely. Many of the Faewilde's oldest historical disagreements are, quite literally, disagreements among Loreacles.
