There is an old belief in the Faewilde that every fae, given enough time, will eventually be chosen by a creature.

No ceremony marks the occasion. There is no pact to sign and, importantly, nobody seems to have explained the arrangement to the fae. One day an animal simply begins appearing. Outside the door. Beneath the worktable. Waiting beside a familiar path. Watching from a windowsill with the peculiar confidence of someone who has already decided where they belong.

These creatures are called the Bestae, a name borrowed from the old bestiaries but made considerably less scholarly by generations of fae referring to their closest animal companions as their “besties.” A Bestae is neither pet nor servant, and attempts to establish otherwise have been met with overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They are companions, confidants, guides, guardians, accomplices, interruptions, and occasionally the primary suspect.

Houndae has appointed himself official greeter of everyone who enters his fae’s life, including strangers, delivery beetles, suspicious bushes, and people he met thirty seconds ago and already considers lifelong friends. Equisse prefers the road, somehow knowing which direction to take long before her companion has decided where they are going. Knightara approaches puddles, suspicious shrubbery, and minor inconveniences with all the gravity of a champion riding into battle.

Elephine remembers everything, particularly promises others hoped she had forgotten. Antlerie lingers at boundaries, where paths divide, hedges open, and one corner of the Faewilde quietly becomes another. Stagmire wanders the mistier places and has an uncanny habit of appearing to those who have lost their way, although following him does not necessarily mean one will arrive where originally intended.

Turnipette is a garden criminal. Root vegetables appear to constitute treasure, currency, and personal destiny, and several gardeners have lodged formal complaints to no effect. Bunnoire cultivates considerably more mystery, appearing at twilight to stare knowingly into the middle distance, at least until she is discovered doing something profoundly undignified. And Pavonelle is magnificent, knows it, and considers ceremonies, portraits, arguments, and private conversations vastly improved by his presence.

No one has determined whether a fae chooses a Bestae or a Bestae chooses a fae.
