In the northern galleries of the Faewilde, there once hung a portrait no keeper could remember acquiring.

It showed a woman in profile, pale against a blackened rose, her face calm and unreadable. No plaque named her. No family claimed her. Yet every winter, a fresh dark bloom appeared beneath the frame, though the gallery windows had been sealed for centuries.

Visitors began calling her the Monochrose Lady.

Some said she had been a painter who mixed ash into her pigments so memory would cling to the canvas. Others believed she was the last heir of a house that had ordered every color removed after mourning took hold of it. The only certainty was this: anyone who stood too long before the portrait began to remember something they had never lived.

A corridor lit by one candle. A gloved hand closing a garden gate. The sound of rain against stone. A rose cut carefully from a thornless stem and laid beside a name no longer spoken.

The necklace now known as Monochrose is said to have been found behind that portrait when it was finally taken down. Dalmatian jasper forms the strand in pale, ink-speckled beads, interrupted by black tourmaline and dark geometric accents like notes written in the margins of an old confession. At its center rests the monochrome rose cameo, still carrying the quiet face of the woman in the gallery.

The black toggle was added later by an unnamed curator who refused to leave the relic unfinished. Its ring represented the story preserved. Its bar, the story sealed. Once fastened, the two held each other in place, much as the portrait had held its secret for generations.

The gallery is empty now. The portrait is gone.

But some who wear Monochrose claim that mirrors occasionally show a second figure standing just behind them, holding a black rose and waiting to be remembered.
