In the Faewilde, the old saying that love gives you wings is not metaphorical. It is simply an observation.

Love fairies are born heart-first, in a manner of speaking. Their hearts swell with magic long before their wings are ready to carry it, leaving young fledglings hilariously overburdened by their own enchantment. For a brief and awkward season, they are all blush-bright heart, shimmering flight-spark, and one or two iridescent feathers where a proper pair of wings ought to be. They flutter. They hop. They fall out of perfectly respectable branches, then behave as though this was the intended route downward.

Blushplume belongs to this ungainly stage of fairyhood. Its great rose-pink heart recalls the fledgling's early abundance of magic, while the pale, spectral plume beneath it marks the first promise of true flight. The glint above is known among Faewilde naturalists as flight-spark, the little concentration of magic that appears shortly before a young fairy's wings begin catching up with the rest of it.

Eventually, of course, even the most spectacularly heart-heavy fledgling learns to fly. When several take to the air together for the first time, their overlapping heartlight, feathers, and flight-spark form the shimmering phenomenon known as an Amorcrest. But Blushplume remembers the moment just before that triumph, when the wings are still too small, the heart is much too large, and gravity remains an extremely personal adversary.
