There are serpents in the Faewilde whose scales have never agreed upon a color.

They live beneath the oldest roots, where underground rivers polish stone smooth and daylight arrives only as rumor. In darkness they seem almost black. Bring a lantern near and blue surfaces first, deep and cold as water beneath moonlight. Another step and there is green. Then violet. Then colors for which the Faewilde has names and we do not.

The phenomenon is called vipersheen.

Naturalists insist the changing colors allow these serpents to disappear among wet stone, deep water, and shadow. Folklorists disagree. They claim the colors reveal what a serpent has noticed: green for curiosity, blue for patience, violet for suspicion. An older account offers one additional warning. Should the scales continue changing while the eyes remain unwaveringly green, the serpent is no longer deciding whether it has noticed you.

It has.

No scholar has volunteered to determine what happens next.

Vipersheen carries that elusive shifting light through dark green tiger’s eye, its colors moving through deep green, blue, teal, violet, and near-black before giving way to smaller silver serpents guarding either side of a great intertwined gathering below. Among those silver coils wait tiny green eyes, easily overlooked until the light finds them.

Whether they are watching is, of course, a matter of scholarly dispute.

The scales change color. The eyes do not.
