The oldest caverns do not echo everything they hear.

Some sounds return immediately. Others wander through tunnels for years, slipping through cracks in the stone and circling chambers no map remembers. And once in a very long while, an echo finds something solid enough to become.

Those are called The Sonarshards.

The bats that inhabit the deepest reaches of the Faewilde are said to navigate by more than sound. Each call they release into the dark carries a question with it: What waits ahead? What moved? What changed? What should be avoided? Most answers return as ordinary echoes. But when a call encounters something powerful enough to alter it, the returning sound begins to crystallize.

First comes a tiny faceted node, the point at which the echo changed.

Then the rest of the sound hardens beneath it into a long, glass-bright shard.

The bats carry these strange echoes from the caverns, though no one has discovered whether they collect them deliberately or simply refuse to abandon a call once it has become something tangible.

Azureverb was formed from an echo that traveled farther than expected. Its black-winged bearer hangs above a clear faceted signal point and a deep cobalt shard, the blue growing darker toward its heart as though distance itself accumulated there. Cave-readers say Azureverbs come from passages that continue long after sensible explorers would have turned around.

Nullecho is considerably less reassuring. Beneath its black bat sits a dark faceted node, yet the shard below remains almost perfectly clear. According to cavern lore, this occurs when a sonar call returns with no information at all. Not silence. Not emptiness. Simply nothing the echo is willing to describe. Most experienced spelunkers consider a Nullecho an excellent reason to choose another tunnel.

Sonaripe carries a stranger resonance. A silver bat guards a vivid red signal bead above an iridescent shard that flashes faint traces of color when the light catches it. These shards are believed to form where an echo encounters something on the verge of becoming: a chrysalis about to open, an old spell beginning to wake, a sealed door preparing to yield. The red node marks the instant of change; the shifting shard records all the possibilities that followed.

And Leatherflare is impossible to mistake. Its antique-bronze bat carries a champagne-colored signal point over a shard burning brilliant red-orange. Leatherflares form when a returning call brings warning. Heat. Motion. Sudden danger. The flare is not an omen of disaster so much as the cavern itself shouting pay attention in the only language it knows.

No two Sonarshards are expected to form exactly alike. Their colors depend upon what the original call encountered, how far it traveled, and what followed it home.

Which means the collection is never truly complete.

There are always more echoes moving through the dark.
