There are places in the Faewilde whose names were lost before anyone thought to write them down.

Deep along the oldest paths, ruins occasionally emerge from beneath root and moss: fragments of walls, shallow alcoves cut into stone, pillars standing where no building remains. Many bear the same peculiar painted emblem. Its colors survive in improbable flashes of orange, green, red, violet and blue, even where the structure surrounding it has weathered almost beyond recognition.

These symbols have come to be known simply as Shrinemarkers.

No surviving account explains what they meant. Some believe they identified sacred ground. Others insist they marked places where offerings could safely be left for unseen travelers. A less comforting theory holds that they were warnings, and that the flowers commonly found growing beneath them are not offerings at all, but evidence that the old wards are still doing whatever they were made to do.

Attempts to translate the markings have produced several contradictory alphabets, two academic feuds, and one expedition whose members returned perfectly unharmed but refused ever to discuss where they had been. Thus, the prevailing scholarly recommendation regarding a newly discovered Shrinemarker remains refreshingly concise:

Admire it. Leave the flowers alone. Do not lick the ruins.

The Shrinemarkers take their name from those surviving signs: bright remnants of an old Faewilde language still keeping its secrets beneath bronze, blossoms, and creeping green.
