The bloodline remembers every name it has ever carried.

In the oldest halls of the Faewilde, succession was not recorded on parchment. It was kept in pearl. Each pale bead marked a vow upheld, a treaty honored, a generation permitted to continue. The necklace passed quietly from heir to heir, growing longer with every reign, until it came at last to the daughter whose name had been deliberately struck from the record.

She returned wearing it anyway.

But the pearls no longer stood alone. Between them gleamed garnets dark as sealed wine and rose-gold hematite with the hard shine of newly forged armor. At the center rested the ancestral stone, red-veined and two-faced, bearing one history on either side. One face held brighter crimson and scattered mineral light; the other had ripened into burgundy, shadow and old green-gray markings, as though the stone itself could not agree on which version of the past was true.

The heir refused to choose only one.

She replaced the old fastening with a hidden magnetic seal and declared that the stone would turn whenever she wished it. At feasts, she wore its brighter face and let the assembled houses believe reconciliation had softened her. In council, she reversed it to the darker side, where the buried colors resembled blood beneath ash. Those who understood the warning never asked which face was genuine.

Both were.

The necklace became known as The Red Heir, though whether the title belonged to the woman or the stone was never settled. Some claim she reclaimed the throne that had been denied her. Others insist she dismantled it, pearl by pearl, and scattered its promises among those the bloodline had forgotten.

Only the necklace remains certain: tradition may be inherited, but allegiance is chosen.
