The Frondwatchers are a rare branch of the Squintae, recognized by their single luminous eyes, ornate silver bodies, and restless curtains of dangling leaves.
They do not fly in the ordinary fashion. Each creature hovers almost perfectly still while the leaf fringe beneath it ripples, overlaps, and stirs as though caught in a current the surrounding air cannot feel. No wingbeat has ever been heard, and no Frondwatcher has volunteered an explanation.
Each keeps watch over a different threshold of the Faewilde:
Grassquintlingers among tall grasses, mossy stones, and half-forgotten woodland paths, noticing every footstep before the traveler knows they have been seen.
Aquasquintwatches rain, hidden springs, moonlit pools, and waterways that have quietly abandoned their original course.
Coalsquintappears beside dying fires, its ember-ringed eye studying whatever remains after the flames have gone silent.
Feralsquintclaims no territory and accepts no assignment. It watches whatever captures its interest and is widely considered the least predictable of its kind.
Tempusquintsees no single moment. Within its pale blue-green eye, past, present, and possible futures lie layered together, each visible at once.
Frondwatchers do not seek affection, offer reassurance, or explain what they have witnessed. Their leaves dance, but their bodies remain still. Their eyes follow, though they never turn.
The meadow is not hostile.
It simply knows that you are there.
