Most creatures look at a stranger and decide whether they recognize them.

A Scalesight decides whether they are worth remembering.

They are said to belong to an old breed of scaled watchers found along the warmer borders of the Faewilde, where ruined stone disappears beneath vines and certain paths are guarded by creatures that have never found much use for introductions. No reliable account agrees on whether they are serpents, dragons, or something considerably older that merely shares features with both.

The eye is the only part most travelers ever see clearly.

Gray-blue and vertically slit, it remains perfectly still while its owner studies whatever has entered its territory. Scalesights are not known for sudden movements. They prefer assessment: the weight of a footstep, the direction of a glance, the hesitation before an answer. What other creatures would call suspicion, they consider basic attention to detail.

Below each eye hangs a dark faceted bead known in old field notes as the reckoning stone. Its metallic surface catches flashes of pewter, charcoal, and cold blue while the watcher considers what it has seen.

Then comes the clear drop.

According to Faewilde naturalists, this is where the Scalesight keeps its conclusion.

A clear drop means the traveler has been observed and found unremarkable. Clouding supposedly indicates uncertainty. Color appearing where none existed before is considerably less encouraging.

Fortunately, the drops carried by Scalesight remain beautifully clear.

Whether this means you have passed inspection or the examination has simply not finished is, regrettably, undocumented.

The gaze is only the beginning. The judgment comes after.
