There are dragons who guard treasure, dragons who guard thresholds, and dragons who guard the old places where the mountains still remember fire. But the one called Scaleguard was entrusted with something rarer: dragons not yet grown into the weight of their wings.
Two younglings follow in the elder dragon’s wake, circling close as they learn the ancient disciplines of their kind. They are taught where fire may be kindled and where it must be swallowed, how to recognize a promise worth keeping, how to hear danger moving beneath stone, and why a hoard is measured by more than what gleams within it. They are presumably also taught considerably more practical matters, although Aranbrid’s records are frustratingly silent on questions such as who teaches a dragon to land gracefully, whether younglings are permitted starter hoards, and precisely how many accidental fires are considered part of the educational process.
Green tiger’s eye runs through their path with shifting bands of deep forest green and hidden light. In the Faewilde, such stones are sometimes called scaleglass, for their gleam seems to move beneath the surface rather than across it. Young dragons practice upon it, learning to follow that wandering shimmer until their eyes can find movement through smoke, darkness, and glamour alike. This particular lesson is well documented. Whether anyone has ever successfully stopped a young dragon from pouncing on the scaleglass afterward is not.
The elder remains at the center, watchful while the two smaller dragons circle below. One day they will leave its keeping to claim skies, secrets, and perhaps hoards of their own. Until then, they remain beneath the protection and instruction of the Scaleguard, learning that before a dragon may guard anything worth keeping, it must first learn what is worth protecting.
A dragon’s first treasure is what it is taught ✨
From the Faewilde Chronicles: The younglings circling Scaleguard have considerably more to learn before they claim skies and hoards of their own. Discover scaleglass training, the ancient disciplines of dragonhood, and the surprisingly serious tradition of choosing one’s first treasure in How Do You Teach a Dragon? Inside the Faewilde’s Scaleguard Apprenticeships.
Care Note:
Put Scaleguard on last after perfumes, lotions, and other getting-ready potions have settled to help protect the green tiger’s eye and silver-toned components; after wear, wipe gently with the polishing cloth included with your purchase and store flat or hanging where the dragons won’t become tangled.
