Some things in the Faewilde are beautiful because they are dangerous.

Sanguivane belongs to that old category.

The first sign is usually red.

A hard little gleam catches somewhere above the dark, bright and faceted enough to resemble a drop of light trapped beneath glass. Beneath it hangs a black-winged shape, folded close around itself, as though guarding what comes next.

Then the second red appears.

Longer. Sharper. Suspended below like a drop that has forgotten how to fall.

There are stories that such ornaments were once worn as warnings, though no one agrees on what they warned against. Some say the red meant blood already spilled. Others insist it meant blood still owed. A few claim the bat was the important part, and that the two crimson points merely marked whatever had chosen to follow it home.

The Faewilde has never been particularly generous with explanations.

What remains is the shape of the omen itself: red above, red below, and a little darkness keeping watch between them.
