Mortumonarch was never especially interested in modesty while alive, and death appears to have improved nothing.

Old Faewilde records describe an infamous patron of musicians, dressmakers, perfumers, florists, and anyone else capable of making an entrance more complicated. Mortumonarch considered subtlety a design flaw, commissioned mourning clothes before becoming ill, and once delayed an entire midsummer gathering because the musicians had been placed too far from the peacocks.

Portraits show the same crowned skull, gilded wings, purple stones, and black faceted drop found in these earrings, though later copies become increasingly elaborate until one manuscript gives Mortumonarch seventeen crowns, a velvet bier drawn by white deer, and what appears to be a private thunderstorm.

The crown, naturally, went into the burial chamber.

So did the jewels.

So, according to one exhausted archivist, did “most of the velvet, four silver candelabra, an unreasonable quantity of perfume, and the better harpsichord.”

The funeral lasted nine days. Musicians were instructed never to repeat a piece. Guests wore black, gold, or violet according to rules nobody fully understood. Candles filled every corridor, lilies climbed the staircases, and the deceased disappeared beneath so many layers of silk, feathers, jewels, and flowers that several witnesses quietly wondered whether anyone had remembered the body.

They had.

Mortumonarch had left instructions.

Very detailed instructions.

Death did little to end the spectacle. Sightings still place Mortumonarch drifting through abandoned ballrooms, ruined conservatories, and occasionally other people’s formal dinners, usually accompanied by the scent of violets and the unmistakable impression that the room has been underdecorated.

No one remembers exactly what Mortumonarch was famous for.

Everyone remembers the accessories.

“Death is no reason to surrender the accessories.”

Care Note:

Keep the plated metal and faceted cabochon posts dry and avoid drops, hard knocks, or being tossed loose with other jewelry, as impact can jar the cabochons from their settings or bend the long findings; after wear, lay Mortumonarch flat and wipe gently with a soft cloth (we’ll provide a polishing cloth with your item, because even the undead deserve maintenance).
