Before spring learned flowers, it learned how to break stone.

Deep beneath the Faewilde, where roots slept clenched beneath the last iron frost, something red began to move through the earth. It did not rise gently. It struck upward in pulses, splitting old soil, waking buried seeds and driving winter from the ground one stubborn inch at a time.

The first creature to hear it was a silver ram.

He followed the rhythm below the roots until he reached a field that had not bloomed in a hundred years. There, he lowered his horns and charged the frozen ground. The earth broke beneath him, revealing red jasper shaped by pressure and bloodstone darkened with moss, ash and the memory of ancient rain.

From those stones, the root-smiths fashioned Marsroot.

The red jasper was left in uneven, earthen pieces, because the force beneath the soil had never moved in perfect circles. Bloodstone beads were set between them like dark seeds waiting for heat. Opaque red glass traced the hidden current from stone to stone, while small iridescent gray crystals marked the glint of frost still clinging to the roots as spring forced its way through.

At the center stands the ram who first answered the underground call. A small red star follows at his shoulder, said to be the first spark thrown from the earth when his horns struck frozen ground.

Those who later found Marsroot mistook it for a warrior’s ornament. It was not. It belonged to path-breakers, seed-wakers and those who understood that courage is not always a blaze. Sometimes it is pressure. Sometimes it is persistence. Sometimes it is one living thing refusing to remain buried.

Even now, when the ground is coldest, the necklace is said to carry a faint rhythm through its stones.

Not a heartbeat.
