There are lions in the Faewilde, though anyone expecting the lions of ordinary forests would be advised to revise their expectations.

The Leonarae are creatures of enormous manes and rather inconvenient majesty, recognizable by the strange crystalline growths that form among their fur as they mature. These begin as small drops around the lower mane, but the central crystal continues growing throughout the creature's life, eventually hanging beneath the chin like a great faceted jewel. No one has established why. The Leonarae themselves have declined to participate in the research.

Two varieties are known. Solarmanae are creatures of heat and daylight, bearing brilliant red manes scattered with ruby-red crystal drops and a long golden-yellow crystal beneath. They are most often encountered sprawled somewhere sunny with the serene confidence of an animal that has never once considered moving simply because someone else would like to sit there.

Noctimanae emerge as the light begins to fail. Their dark manes carry glossy black crystals surrounding a long amber-brown drop, and they have an unfortunate habit of appearing silently at the edge of paths. Whether this is deliberate intimidation or merely how they walk has never been satisfactorily determined. Asking one is generally considered a poor research methodology.

Some lions belong to the sun. Others wait for it to leave.

Avoid drops and hard knocks, as the long faceted glass drops can chip and the multi-dangle mane can catch or tangle; store the earrings hanging or separately and wipe the metal gently after wear with the polishing cloth we'll provide.
