There are many uncertainties concerning the Sios, but one thing is known with uncomfortable confidence: the dead do not become less opinionated.

Somewhere beyond the paths most spirits know better than to follow, nine ancient adjudicators convene beneath no banner and answer to no authority anyone has successfully identified. They are called the Grinjury, and they have never been observed doing anything so reassuring as smiling. A smile suggests warmth. These are grins: broad, fixed, and possessed of the particular satisfaction found only on the face of someone who has already reached a conclusion about you.

What they judge is less certain. The newly dead have arrived before them prepared to confess betrayals, cruelties, broken vows, and terrible mistakes, only to discover that the Grinjury has taken considerably greater interest in some small indignity committed forty-three years earlier. Others have been examined at length and dismissed without explanation. One spirit is said to have been condemned entirely for pronouncing a word incorrectly at a midsummer feast. Whether this account is true hardly matters. Everyone in the Sios believes it.

There are no advocates before the Grinjury, because the Grinjury does not particularly care what you meant. There are no appeals, because nobody knows where one would file them. There is not even convincing evidence that their verdicts carry any actual power.

This has done nothing to make being judged by them less upsetting.

Scholars occasionally insist their name derives simply from the nine grinning figures who compose the jury. Spirits who have actually stood before them tend to favor another explanation: a Grinjury is the peculiar injury suffered when one's dignity discovers that death itself has reviewed the evidence and found one wanting.

They are judging you. And every single one of them looks smug about the verdict. 💀💀💀

Put Grinjury on after lotions, perfume, hairspray, setting spray, sunscreen, and similar products; the silver-toned metal may tarnish fairly quickly, which is a natural surface reaction and can be easily wiped away with the polishing cloth we’ll send along, so wipe it gently after wear and store it dry.
