There are cats in the Faewilde that watch mice.

There are cats that watch doors.

And then there are the ones entrusted with watching things no one else has noticed yet.

Cyanoptic belongs to the latter.

The bright blue eyes carried by these little silver-eared sentinels are said to belong to a peculiar strain of watchcat bred generations ago by fae archivists. They were never expected to guard treasure, chase intruders, or make themselves useful in any conventional sense. Their sole talent was noticing.

A page moved when no wind had entered the room. A reflection blinked half a second too late. A supposedly empty corridor acquired one footprint. A familiar spell contained one unfamiliar word.

The Cyanoptics saw it.

Above each enormous blue iris rests a faceted glass bead in cool aquatic blue, traditionally called a thoughtcatcher by the archivists who kept them. The bead was believed to gather those fleeting impressions that disappear when someone looks away too quickly, holding the observation long enough for the watchcat to decide whether it was important.

This occasionally caused problems.

A Cyanoptic considers almost everything potentially important.

Missing buttons, suspicious shadows, doors left open precisely three inches, unidentified crumbs, the movement of curtains, unusual smells, and visitors who claim they “weren’t touching anything” have all reportedly earned prolonged scrutiny.

Their gaze is not hostile.

It is simply very, very thorough.

And once a Cyanoptic has noticed you, the old archivists warned, attempting to behave casually only makes you more interesting.
