A bright silver star leads the descent, with three twisting trails falling beneath it and smaller stars caught along the way. Each chain turns differently, so the light never strikes the same surface twice. Even without crystals, the silver flashes from nearly every angle, scattering its own cold little sparks as it moves.

Perhaps that is simply what becomes of a shooting star when it crosses too far from familiar heavens. Its tail divides. Its light lingers. And instead of vanishing in an instant, it leaves pieces of itself behind.

Some stars refuse to stay where the heavens put them.
