In the Faewilde, some cats watch birds from windows, fences, and garden walls.

One cat, unfortunately, became ambitious.

Birdwatcher’s Orbit began with a pale little bird who flew higher than expected, past the hedges, past the tallest branches, and into a patch of sky where the stars are very small and very nosy. The cat followed from below, not by flight, exactly, but by sheer determination and a complete misunderstanding of distance.

Now the bird circles above in soft iridescent light, while the cat prowls across a tiny blue world beneath a scattering of stars. Between them hangs a golden scrollwork piece, decorative enough to be a gate, official enough to be a warning, and entirely useless at stopping either creature from continuing the chase.

The frogs have classified the whole event as “astronomical birdwatching.” The bird disagrees. The cat says nothing, which everyone agrees is suspicious.

No one knows whether the cat will ever catch the bird, but the orbit continues: feather above, paw below, stars in between, and one very patient moon enduring the whole thing.
