Watching from a windowsill with the peculiar confidence of someone who has already decided where they belong.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese creatures are called\u003cem\u003e \u003cstrong\u003ethe Bestae\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, a name borrowed from the old bestiaries but made considerably less scholarly by generations of fae referring to their closest animal companions as their “besties.” A Bestae is neither pet nor servant, and attempts to establish otherwise have been met with overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They are companions, confidants, guides, guardians, accomplices, interruptions, and occasionally the primary suspect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHoundae\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003ehas appointed himself official greeter of everyone who enters his fae’s life, including strangers, delivery beetles, suspicious bushes, and people he met thirty seconds ago and already considers lifelong friends. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eEquisse\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eprefers the road, somehow knowing which direction to take long before her companion has decided where they are going. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKnightara\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eapproaches puddles, suspicious shrubbery, and minor inconveniences with all the gravity of a champion riding into battle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eElephine\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eremembers everything, particularly promises others hoped she had forgotten. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAntlerie\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003elingers at boundaries, where paths divide, hedges open, and one corner of the Faewilde quietly becomes another. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eStagmire\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003ewanders the mistier places and has an uncanny habit of appearing to those who have lost their way, although following him does not necessarily mean one will arrive where originally intended.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTurnipette\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eis a garden criminal. Root vegetables appear to constitute treasure, currency, and personal destiny, and several gardeners have lodged formal complaints to no effect. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBunnoire\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/em\u003ecultivates considerably more mystery, appearing at twilight to stare knowingly into the middle distance, at least until she is discovered doing something profoundly undignified.
